Wear the Crop Top
Let’s talk about crop tops.
A few years ago I was working with a coach on improving my body image. She asked me to write down something I really wanted to do but was avoiding due to how my body looked.
I immediately though: “Wear a crop top!”
Up to that point, I was unaware that my inner teenager was dying to jump on the latest trend and put my bellybutton out there for the world to see.
But there it was.
My next thought was: “Whatever. Those days have passed. I’ll definitely never be able to rock a crop top.”
Then I started thinking about all the other things I wasn’t doing because of how my body looked:
I hated going swimming with friends because I was afraid of anyone but my husband and closest friends seeing my body
I recoiled at the idea of having my picture taken and hid in the back row of group photos
I declined offers to go out when the plans involved food or drinks that were not on my “approved” list
When traveling, I would get anxious about eating too much and not exercising enough—which completely shut down the joy of being in a new place
There were so many areas where I wasn’t showing up fully out of fear of being seen and judged.
So many times I let myself feel less-than because of how I looked.
So many times I didn’t do the thing.
Fast forward to today:
Ya girl has a closet full of crop tops.
I don’t think twice about going swimming. Or having my picture taken. Or getting nasty on a basket of wings at the bar while I’m out with friends.
It wasn’t instantaneous. Learning to feel at home in my body took intention, focus and time.
To finally feel free. To wear what I want. To allow myself to be seen. To gain the confidence to show up fully and know that I’m capable of big things.
And it all started with a little voice whispering: Wear the crop top…
If there’s a little voice inside you urging you to do the thing, it’s time to start listening.
